Knee and hip replacement cost in India
Most companies in this business will not put a number on a page. Here are ours, with the stay each figure assumes and every factor that moves it.
These are the ranges quoted to us by the accredited hospitals we work with in Delhi NCR. They are ranges rather than fixed prices because a single figure would be a guess. Your written opinion gives a number for your own case, with the reasoning attached.
What each procedure costs
Hospital charges in US dollars, covering the surgical package described below. Stay figures assume an uncomplicated course.

Ranges are indicative and vary between hospitals and implants. They are reviewed against hospital tariffs periodically, and the date above shows when they were last checked.
What is included, and what is not
The gap between these two columns is where unexpected bills come from. Read the right-hand one carefully.
- Surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre charges
- The implant itself, of the agreed manufacturer and model
- Hospital room for the stated number of days
- Routine pre-operative tests and anaesthetic assessment
- Medication and consumables during admission
- Inpatient physiotherapy during your hospital stay
- Discharge medication and the first outpatient review
- Your implant card, operation notes and post-operative X-rays
- Flights for you and your attendant
- Visa fees
- Accommodation outside the hospital, typically two to four weeks
- Outpatient physiotherapy after discharge, which you will need daily
- Food and local transport
- Treatment of any pre-existing condition needing control before surgery
- Additional hospital days beyond the package if recovery is slower
- Any complication requiring further treatment
Five questions to ask any hospital before you pay a deposit
- Exactly which implant — manufacturer and model — is included at this price, and what does it cost to change it?
- How many days in hospital does the package cover, and what is the daily charge beyond that?
- What happens to the price if a complication occurs? Is there a cap?
- Is outpatient physiotherapy after discharge included, and if not, what does it cost per session?
- How many of this exact operation did the surgeon perform last year?
What moves the number
The largest single variable. A premium system can add substantially, and it is where patients are most often persuaded to spend money that will not benefit them.
Bilateral surgery in one admission costs meaningfully less than two separate trips, but is not suitable for everyone.
Adds to the cost. Genuinely useful in unusual anatomy or severe deformity; less clearly worth it in a straightforward knee.
Failed or infected implants need specialised components, bone graft, and sometimes two operations months apart.
Slower recovery, diabetes or wound problems extend the admission, and days beyond the package are charged separately.
How this compares
Joint replacement is where the price gap between India and Europe or North America is at its widest, because the operation is standardised and the cost difference is almost entirely in hospital overheads rather than in the implant or the surgery itself.
The implant used in Delhi is frequently manufactured by the same company, in the same factory, as the one used in London or Chicago. That is worth knowing when you are comparing figures that differ by a factor of four.
The cheapest quotation is a different matter. In joint replacement, outcome tracks surgeon volume, implant quality and infection prevention — and the lowest price often reflects savings in exactly those three. A revision five years early costs more than the whole of the difference you saved.
Questions about cost
Because a fixed figure would be a guess dressed up as a quotation. What you actually pay depends on the implant chosen, whether one joint or two are done, how long you stay in hospital, and whether any complication arises. The range shows the realistic span, and your written opinion gives a figure for your own case with the reasoning behind it.
For the surgical package, broadly yes at most private hospitals. Some charge international patients differently for room categories or administrative services. You are entitled to ask the hospital directly for their tariff, and we would rather you did — it is the simplest way to confirm that our involvement is not adding to your bill.
Flights, visa fees, accommodation outside the hospital, food outside the hospital, and any treatment for a pre-existing condition that needs stabilising before surgery. The included and excluded lists on this page set it out fully.
It can, and honest estimates say so. The commonest reasons are a longer hospital stay than expected, a complication requiring additional treatment, or a change of implant decided during surgery. Ask the hospital what their policy is on cost variation and get the answer in writing before admission.

Rarely. In joint replacement the largest determinants of outcome are the surgeon's annual volume, the implant, and the infection prevention setup — and the cheapest quotation frequently reflects savings in exactly those areas. A revision operation five years early costs far more than the difference.
Add roughly 20 to 30 per cent to the surgical figure to cover flights for two people, accommodation for three to five weeks, food, local transport and incidentals. We will give you a realistic total in your written opinion rather than only the hospital number.
